vim, make, gcc, tar, (all the GNU tools - cd, ls, etc.), (all the standard *nix tools - echo, cat, etc.), init, mingetty, bash
I mean these are also "obvious", but many other things aren't "essential" (like GKrellM).

I wouldn't say gkrellm is essential... it's nice and I used to use it but it's not really that helpful. Sure it shows you your CPU levels and stuff... so does "top" along with which program is using the most resources and much more info.
As for what else is essential, it depends on what you use your system for. For people who are into graphics, then the GIMP is probably essential. For me it's just an application that I use for screenshots and sometimes a little logo design. For a programmer tcl/tk, gcc, perl, etc are all valuable tools, but for non-programmers, they're hardly touched. See where I'm getting at?

im pretty much all over the board when it comes to my user "status".
