i bought a new hp psc 1210 printer, and tried to set it up in linux. the first problem i ran into was that there was no driver specifically for the 1210 printer, there were drivers for the 900 and the like 2210 printer, but not the 1210 psc printer.
i tried both the 900 and the 2210 drivers, and every time i try 2 print a test page, it says media tray empty. what driver would i pick to make the psc 1210 work and for it to find paper in the media tray? do i HAVE to go through the process of installing those hp drivers that support the psc 1210 specifically? or can i pick another driver that would work with this printer?
i have red hat 9 by the way, and it configured the printer fine with the other drivers i tried, just it wount print anything cuz it says media tray is empty.
thanks in advance.

Unless another JL member knows otherwise, I would say you will need to install the hp drivers that support the psc 1210 specifically.

ok i installed the drivers with apt-get, and when i ran ptal-init setup (or whatever that command was to setup the drivers), i get the error:
Starting the HP OfficeJet Linux driver.
No hpoj devices have been configured.
As root, run "/usr/sbin/ptal-init setup".
actually its not so much an error as it is just, like a statement. it doesnt say any error messages, it just says no devices have been configured. when it probed for usb things it found the psc 1210 i have hooked up, but then it gives me this. when i did the ptaldevid command, it says it cant find the psc 1210.
oh and looking again at what it said, it also had a message:
Currently defined device names ( =default):
*** The following devices are using an obsolete configuration
*** file format. Use "/usr/sbin/ptal-init setup"
*** to delete and re-probe them:
--> "mlc:usb:psc_1200_series"
i tried deleteing it and reprobing it, like the message said, but that didnt help and i kept getting the same error messages. i also treid switching usb ports, but that didnt help./
where should i go from here..? thanks in advance

Are all the required USB modules loaded?
lsmod (list loaded modules to check)
How about the results of dmesg?
dmesg
Check to see if the HP is detected.

Howdy.
I couldn't get any good shots of this printer, but does it have a small "trap door" on the output "catch" tray for 4" x 6" photo paper? My uncle's hp 7550 does, and this may be the media tray it's looking at. Just stuff a 4x6 index card in there and see if the warning goes away.

Hope this helps...

no my printer is the psc 1210, it has like the tray that opens up in the front, and the scanner on top. it doesnt have the small tray for the envelopes or 4x6.
the dmesg has one part about the printer, but it doesnt really specity nething except:

printer.c: usblp0: removed

theres a printer in there, but it says 0 next 2 it... so i dunno
all the usb stuff is loaded because i have a rio500 hooked up thru usb, and it can detect that fine. and when i bootup, it gave me the configure new hardware thing, on which it specified the right printer (hp psc 1200 series). why it doesn thave the drivers for this printer in redhat yet it detects it in configure new hardware is beyond me.
ne ideas?

Well,
What happens is that your usb controller polls the devices out there, and says, "Who the fsck are you?". Your usb device then answers, "I'm an fscking hp psc-1210 all-in-one piece of cron, whazitooya?". At this point, the usb controller passes the info to the OS, and the OS then goes looking for the driver. So, it's common for an OS (any) to know what something is, but not know how to deal with the problem.
I found this from a Google search: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-PSC_1210
Maybe you'll get some ideas, since this does printing and scanning, you have to deal with it on multiple levels (cups and sane).

i got the hp inkjet drivers to run, and so i can print files (although they do come out a little light instead of dark black text, which i dont know how to fix if anyone knows the solution). as for the hp office jet drivers, i cannot get them 2 work. i went to that site, and that helped me get the inkjet drivers to work, but if i want to scan or whatever, then i need to get the hp officejet drivers to work, and i always keep getting the message that
Starting the HP OfficeJet Linux driver.
No hpoj devices have been configured.
As root, run "/usr/sbin/ptal-init setup".
even after it detects the printer but says its using
Currently defined device names ( =default):
*** The following devices are using an obsolete configuration
*** file format. Use "/usr/sbin/ptal-init setup"
*** to delete and re-probe them:
--> "mlc:usb:psc_1200_series"
. i realize i probably posted this, but it still gives it to me even after i got the hp inkejet driver to work.
any more suggestions?
thanks in davnace
