Setting up email server simply

I can't seem to get a simple explaination on how to set up an email server in Linux. I don't want to (horror) understand all the code differences between systems. I want to install a package, answer rudimentary questions on IPs and start giving out email addresses to my fellow workers. The alternative will to buy MS Exchange which I run at another site. I would like to start using Linux but I have to be able to justify the time I spend on it. At the moment the adjustment from the MS world looks to be fraught with difficulties, not the least of is the condecension of part of the community towards MS trained people. ("What you don't code? You imbecile". No and I don't build car engines as a hobby, but still manage somehow to get to the supermarket now and then)Anyway if you can suggest a package that will go with the Mandrake 8.0 I've just installed I'll give it a go. Thanks.

AFAIK, Mandy (like RH) comes with sendmail already configured and ready to go. There may be some trimming to do, but if so, that will be documented on the Mandy site. In RH, you just turn it on, and you are on the air with it, recieving and sending mail for your domain. You don't even HAVE to have MX records,that's a "good thing", but it works great without them.

Yea, sendmail comes standard on almost all linux installs and there is a ton o information on it. Check at http://www.linuxdocs.org

also, Qmail is an extreamly good email program once you get the hang of it.

We just switched from an Eudora Mail Pro email system on WinNT to a Qmail email server on Slackware Linux and it was relatively painless once I got to understand it all.

I had the same problem.


Looking for a solution, I went to Webmin (http://www.webmin.com/), and using their admin-tool, setting up sendmail is a breeze.
