When gdm is shutting down there is an error, how can I determine what this is in order to fix the problem?

I don't know, it's one of the messages in the shutdown process. It just says something like shutting down gdm error [!!]

Does this error stop you shutting down, or is this question just out of interest?

just to add to o0zi's question, what desktop enviorment are you running? and do you just get this error when shutting down or does it happen say if you reboot x-windows? what distro are you running?

I hope I'm giving you all enough information to help. The message seems to appear when the computer is switching to runlevel 6. The system still shuts down, I just don't know where I can get log with information on the error. I tried # gdm-stop and # gdm-start sucessfully with no issues, but right after it shuts down my pcmcia card manager gdm tries to stop and there is an error message similar to 'error stopping gdm'. I have the latest builds of gentoo installed on my laptop with the gentoo-sources kernel installed.

Have you tried searching for 'error stopping gdm' in the Gentoo forums as it could be a known issue? Try that while waiting for a JL member to hopefully help.

I guess I'm still new to gentoo, but I went in the bug section of gentoo.org and Searched for error stopping GDM and found 1 match for my problem at http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24399

Thanks for that good suggestion mdwatts, I find that gentoo forum goers rarely reply to my questions as often as JL forums users. This is a great community!

Dunno if this adds to the discussion in any way, but now that you mention it, I have noticed that I get an error in GDM when I reboot Mandrake.

Basically the error says that Mandrake is trying to stop GDM, but GDM is not running (and so cannot be stopped). I probably get a similar error under other distros, but I only happened to notice it under Mandrake, as the reboot messages don't flash by so fast.

I always considered this a "fake error" and never worried my pretty little head about it-- should I have?

No, I see from following the link above that I was right. It's just something that "looks bad", apparently in Mandrake as well as Gentoo.

:)
