Did anybody notice that copying some files from a fat32 hdd to another fat32 hdd takes 100% cpu load and of course is insane slow?
I have 2 hdds, /deev/hda* /dev/hdc* and nothing else, udma4 enabled.
If i copy something from a fat32 fs to another fs (i use reiserfs) things are pretty fast and are low cpu overhead. The same thing if i do it backwords (reiser -> fat32). If i copy from reiser 2 reiser i get huge speeds ( 25-30 Megs/sec). But if i copy from fat32 2 fat32, surpise. I get at first a reasonable transfer rate ( for ABOUT 5 sec.) and then it goes down to few Kb/sec. and cpu goes all the way up.(it has huge system load and wery small user load). My system is Mandrake 9.1
Tests where made with MidnightCommander, Kde, Gnome, cp all showing the same simptome.
Any ideas ?

sorry to be a prude, but if you want fast fat copies, use windows, rememeber fat is a propretary platform, linux support is good because of reverse engineering and much lost data, but it will never be able to handle it like windows will, since windows is designed for it, if you have fat drives and no windows, then maybe its time to do some formating work

what were you hoping for???

badger MS into releasing their code so that the rest of the world can be compliant with their standards, its hard to support something we cant have access to
