Mandrake is an easy to install, easy to use, application/driver heavy Linux distribution. It is highly recommended for those who have never used Linux before.

Here's the Mandrake web site. (http://www.linux-mandrake.com)

You can download it, buy the CDs for $5 from linuxcentral.com (http://www.linuxcentral.com), or you can buy the supported versions at your local software reseller.

I could have sworn you had already installed linux. You are currently using red hat? Or are you using Linux at school?

Mandrake is like RedHat but more for the desktop.

It's good that you noticed the default linux desktops for most distros look like windows. People did that on purpose because they wanted to make it easy for people who had only used win.

But most people with any taste in art use enlightenment. Enlightenment is pretty much the best GUI there is. Better than windows and mac and any of the other linux window managers for sure. But you have to get the right the theme for it. And also I found that I had to edit my theme slightly...

But now my GUI is definately the best that there money can buy... So that's worth it.

Mandrake is a distribution of Linux. And all Linux distributions give you access to the command line interface, but a lot of them tend to hide it and make Linux more GUI like. There's nothing wrong with that, but there's a lot of power and flexibility if you know how to use the CLI.

ok ok I think I understand. :p
and yes error27 I did just install Redhat7.1
but I have it start up in the CLI (prompt)
and I always forget about xwindows, which is good for me because I am really trying to learn this stuff.
Now I'm guessing Enlightenment is a total diffent OS? or is it just the interface?

Mandrake is like RedHat but more for the desktop
So really I should be running Mandrake sice I'm on a standalone, right?
Mandrake still uses all the same commands:awk, grep, chpass, bla bla bla bla
uses and things like that?
or is it like windows just the dos is ls -a, rm, cp, bla bla bla bla???

I hope no one minds alot of questions I'm alittle new to the seen and came from a Microsoft background. :(

I see no reason for you to switch to Mandrake if you have Redhat 7.1 installed and working.

Most distros are the same when it comes to the commandline utilities and applications.

What makes the distros different is the custom installers they provide, sometimes their own configuration utilities for networking , hardware etc. and some come with gui desktops such as Gnome, KDE, Blackbox, Enlightenment and so on.

I would suggest you visit some of the main distros websites to learn what you can and also read some of the NHF's to get you started. Don't try to do anything complicated at first, but try to learn to basics. Stick with your base install you have now until you feel you have enough knowledge to attempt upgrading or installing different components of your system.
