I have just recently built a network in my house for a class I'm taking in TCP/IP. As a side project, I am going to see if I can get my Mandrake 9.1 box to see the shares on my windows 2000 server. The problem that I am havig is that I cannot get Samba to install. I downloaded the newset version off of the internet, I even tried installing it from the CD. What will happen is it will say "The following packages need to be installed: " and list the packages it needs. Then rather than looking on the MDK 9.1 cd's for said packages, it will go to an internet ftp site and try to download them. Is there any way that I can get samba to install from the cd rather than trying to go to the internet?

Run up MCC (Mandrake Control Center), go to Software Management > software Sources Manager. In the cofigure sources window click on Add.
On the add a source window click on Removeable Device for Type of Source. give it a name, click on browse and navigate to your cdrom drive, click Ok. Repeat for the other 2 disks.

What happens when you try to use rpmdrake to install Samba I believe Samba Samba 2.2.7a should be on the CD already. are you getting a message saying something to the effect that dependences need to be resolved. this is most likely why additional packages are being downloaded:D

I tried installing the version of Samba off the CD. It still tries to go out to the internet to find the packages it needs, which incidentally, are all on the CD...

If you know the packages, and you have the cd's, why not just install the said rpm's from cd?

What happens when rpmdrake try's to install additional packages from the net? do the get downloaded then installed? or do you get errors? why not try getting the mandrake i586 rpm from RPMfind.net (http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=samba&submit=Search+...)

Umm, silly question, but are the 3 CDs in the Software Sources Manager actually enabled (do they have a check mark next to them)?
If you haven't told MDK to use a particular source, it won't, so you could also uncheck any Internet-based sources if you don't want to use them.
Don't forget to choose "Save and Quit" to save the new configuration, and "Update" in the main screen wouldn't hurt either....
Hope this helps.
