Backing up with cpio instead of tar

If you're like me then you've never used anything besides tar to make file backups. So eventually I began wondering what was so special about cpio when compared to tar. You know... I've always wondered how to use cpio. It's manpage was one of the most confusing pieces of work I've ever read. This Linuxjournal tutorial is pretty informative!
