Which Linux is best? There are dozens if not hundreds of them. Which ones do you like and why?

As you say there are hundreds of them and they are all aimed at a slightly different market. At the end of it all it comes down to what you want it for and your own personal preferences. Try a few and see what you think.

More experienced with a modem - Slackware
More experienced with a network connection - Debian or Suse
Server - FreeBSD (ain't linux but you axed)
