Im running redhat 9 on a dell 8250 box with a broadcom modem and i used the help file in the library to get it running but when i use kppp to dial out it gets stuck on the itnitializing (sorry for the spelling but you know what it is). I tried messing with the cr and lr and the post and pre init timing but it still doesnt work. Any ideas?

Does kppp initialise the correct device? Check the /dev/tty setting.
Does kppp have correct permissions to initialise? Try 'chmod 666 /dev/ttyS*".
Is there a sym link involved? ln -s /dev/ttyS* /dev/modem.

Hi guys. Sorry for posting a question as a reply, but quite frankly, in 20 minutes I found no way to post a question. Stupid, I know, but that's it. I just can't figure out how to post a question, since I can't start a thread. Any guidance here would also be appreciated.

About the kppp problem. I was using Mandrake 9.0, and during installation I've configured dial-up for one of my ISPs. After the installation was finished, that connection worked fine with kppp. Next, I proceeded to add another connection in kppp, and it also worked fine.

I backed up my /home dir and installed Mandrake 9.1. After that, my second connection (the one that exists only within kppp) started to report that it times out waiting for pppd to come up. Then it asks me to turn on debugging, which I do, but it still asks me to turn it on every time this problem occurs. The strange thing is, after a few times I try to dial up, it suddenly works. This ISP works fine with my Win2K system.

My guess is that it would help to configure the other ISP through pppd configuration, but I'm not sure how to do that. Any help appreciated.

This link first.
http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91066
Then do a search to see if there is a answer already. Just click the "search" button.
Then here:
http://www.justlinux.com/forum/index.php?s=. Click on the correct forum, Hardware, Software, Installation etc. When that comes up there is a button "New Thread" click it for your question. Please use a good title. Don't use "Newbie needs help". Mod will likely close your thread with a good hand slap. A good title "Dual booting, Windows doesn't show". Whoever reads that will know if they can help. You can put "newbie" in the post. That helps. Person will give more details on how to fix.

Please also give as much info as you can about what is wrong and the system you are using. See my sig below. When I have a hardware question, all my stuff is below for them to see including the distro of Linux. You can put yours in through the profile.

Please help others when you learn enough about Linux and can.
