we are going to use some *hacked* linux machine on our corporate network! I'm going to freak out!
Our company was purchased a while ago by a large corporation. We've built a very reliable system with every backbone being a linux machine.
Did we get hit by mblaster? NO
Did corporte? YES
Did we get hit by sobig? NO
Did they? YES
When are they going to get it? I work with these guys on a daily basis over network issues and we always have a better product using open source tools..... it's always the same.
Meanwhile, every meeting is laced with jokes about Linux. I can't take it any more.
Just my little rant. I'm done now

Meanwhile, every meeting is laced with jokes about Linux. I can't take it any more. Do something active about it. Since corporate minds operate on a bottom line mentality, convince them that using Linux is more cost-effective.
1. Document your Linux machines' uptimes; contrast those with the downtimes of the MS computers.
2. Document the occurrences of virus/worm attacks and other security breaches. Were your Linux boxen affected/infected? Were the MS boxen?
3. Try to develop a cost analysis of both the short and long term financial outlay involved in implementing and supporting Linux systems as opposed to their MS counterparts. Be realistic; good *NIX-savy IT people are harder to find than their MS counterparts, and often command/demand a higher salary.
4. In your documentation/analysis, be sure to include all areas where costs could be reduced by using Linux. Some of those areas might include:
a. Lost revenue due to worms/virii crippling MS servers which handle online ordering, billing/payments, extranet connectivity with vendors, etc.
b. Labor costs incurred as a result of having to rectify any damage done to the above servers.
c. Labor costs incurred in cleaning up after virii which have infected user's machines on your corporate LAN.
d. General loss of productivity caused by disruption of your network.
e. The financial and legal ramifications that accompany a compromised corporate system (theft or dissemination of sensitive company data, personal customer data, etc.).

That's all right. If my dad decides to call me one more time from Hope College (where my sister is) with yet ANOTHER of my sister's friends' machines, with (a) no firewall, (b) no patches applied in the last year or more, and (c) amazingly enough, MSBlaster also, I think I'm going to lose it...
The really effing retarded thing is, if you shut down the RPC service (by disabling it in the hardware profile -- there's apparently no way that lowly users can shut stuff down; Bill knows best, I suppose... ), the entire OS fails to boot. That's funny; no other OS in the world requires RPC to get up and running...

If I have to hear 1 more time....
Just use windows to play the game
Windows is way more secure then Linux
How do I get nvidia drivers installed
Why can't I play mp3s in redhat (version 8 or l8er)
... I'll break down the door of the person who said it, and brutally pickaxe murder them.

I thought he was networking with us? What am I missing. :D
My ISP has taken a beating and still is. Surfing is slow as molasis, even now. They notified us that Lucent (Their modem pool/server vendor ) is actively working to install all the latest security patches and they hope to restore normal service by the weekend.
Sneakysnake, come back with a standard comment at the meetings. Something like 'Yeah, stability and reliability is boring man'
Personally, it was easy to convert all my family, friends and in-laws to Linux. 'Next time I am over, I am installing Linux because I am tired of maintaining your machine. I won't support Windows anymore'. Dual boot them, and let er rip. (Win4Lin for my brother...$2K cad program). The best thing I ever did. I feel your pain, but honestly, except for a new modem for my Mom, nothing. No calls.
Sister In Law: I can't get onto the internet with Windows
Me: Can you get your on in Linux
Sister:Yes
Me: So what do you care
Sister:Uhhhhhh. {Pause} Can I play dominoes on the web in Linux
Me: Yes
Never another word.

I was watching a news network the other day during the sobig thing. They were talking about the recent viruses and one guy was saying it only affects windoze and the other security problems. After about a ten minute discussion, which was pretty good I might add, they went to commercial. Get ready, this is the funny part. The commercial about the 'new server 2003' that is so secure came on.
I had a headache after that. I laughed so hard I feel out of the bed and hit my noggin on the night stand.
With security like that, we don't have a chance. Reminds me of the "Full Metal Jacket' movie where the guy leaves his foot locker open and the drill instructor says that's why there are so many thieves in the world. You left it open for the crooks.
Thought for the day; What if all the servers on the net ran windoze? 'Crash and burn' comes to mind.

hehe rather funny,
the company im training at now has a windows server, and i'd love to make them convert to linux, but sadly none of them know linux, and im leaving in two weeks hehe.. so i did what i could do provided i'd get away with it lol: installed a linux firewall, and installing a linux NIDS soon, hehe..
Don't they know..

We had a pretty secure network here at the hospital where I work- or so I thought. The first 2 days of MSblaster went by pretty smooth. But someone who remotes from home with VPN on a windows laptop introduced the virus/worm into some NT servers which apparently hadn't been patched. That was all she wrote. Email (Groupwise) , lab results , radiology all went down at various times due to NT servers and windows workstations. Luckily the main servers are Unix-AIX and Netware.
I emailed someone I know in IT and asked them how they were doing- he said a lot of OT was being piled up in IT and there goes their budget! I told him that since I was running linux at home- I wasn't sweating this virus (maybe in the future if linux gets more popular I'll have to worry). And I suggested they consider that linux/unix/Netware could be better than unix/windows/Netware and they could save money on some licenses (help out with the budget). Hopefully I planted a mustard seed. :)

Sorry about placing this post in the Networking section. I was reading threw the networking posts, and thinking about the crap network that Corporate has so I guess I hit the button a little early.
The worst part about all this is my imediate manager. He's quick to take credit for the success we have had with Linux but is also quick to make jokes with corporate about linux or open source software. That pisses me off soooooo bad.
What is it with these people? Where do they get their loyalty to one OS? What happened to using what is best for the company?

Fear of losing control/power is a major motivator for some people's behavior.
Also, when someone is trained extensively in windows server maintenance, they will be very reluctant to give up that power/control and learn a new system. The only thing that works to change server OS's is a positive benefit/cost ratio. And that has to be proven. We very rarely change something in our lives because of a pure desire to do the right thing. Usually we have some benefit coming back to us (feeling good about ourselves, more money, more sex, etc).
So if you want to make a difference- you have to show them in concrete ways:

hard candy, what hospital do you work for. I work in IT at a large health care system in the midwest and we had the exact same issue with the viruses.
Similar situation... the Netware and AIX boxes were completely unaffected by the virus but most of the Windows machines all took a serious dump. Attempting to quickly patch well over 3000 PC's and 250 servers makes for a seriously long day. :(

(I hope none of them had worms though).:p

My favorites are
No Sound: Searched Board - only to enter the tread to find out that they have an acer onboard sound card and all people do inside the thread is post their own searches with hundreds/thousands of hits.
Help!Newbie, Ugent Help! - only to enter the thread to find out that they can't RTFM to see where they change the default fonts in KDE, or Couldn't find the hidden 'Sound Mixer' entry cleverly hidden under the obscure 'Sound and Video' option and their sound it low.
Or Help!Newbie, Urgent Help! - only enter the thread to hear someone say, I am new to Linux and beein using it for 2 hours and can't get wine enabled Doom running, can't get apache running, need to set up an FTP server by 12 midnight, need help with the nvidia driver, need to recompile the kernel because the P75 I have is slow and WHY ISN"T THIS ALL INTUITUIVELY OBVIOUS...man Linux documentation sucks!

I can understand how frusting newbie questions for your more experienced folks are - so far I've been able to get around this trap because as a smart boy I first read the posting guide lines because the support you receive correlates significantly with their level of anger. :)
I've been with Linux for four months now and I like Linux n00be questions a lot better than all those Windows problems I have to solve- uncountable times "How can I go into the internet?" and due to the most recent virii "Help, my PC behaves weird". Next thing I'm gonna get for my birthday from my parents is a "I won't fix your Windows" and I hope they'll get the hint. ;)
