In the past I have tried to write my own IPTables scripts, but recently I've been trying to do some research into some of the other options like Shorewall, or smoothwall?

Does anyone have any experience with any of these or similar projects that might offer opinions as to their worth?

Just a little side info, I'm going to want to use the box that will run this software as a firewall/router to my home network.

Thanks,
cotfessi

If you want to have a pure firwall type machine I would use http://www.astaro.com/. We use this where I work and it was realy easy to setup. It's free to home users. It's basicly a small linux distro with a nice web interface.

I'm currently using IPCop, which is similar to smoothwall, but (see the thread "Smoothwall or RedHat Linux 9.0?" in Networking forum) they say its a lot better than smoothwall.

I use shorewall, it's really easy to configure and does the job really well. :p

I use Easy Firewall Generator for Iptables.
It doesn't even have to be installed. Just go here (http://easyfwgen.morizot.net/gen/) and put in your information. After it creates your script, save it and try running it to make sure it works. After that, cp it to your startup scripts. The End.

My vote goes with shorewall, I use it at 3 locations.
It can be a bit of a learning curve, but works great for me...
