In most cases you'll only need cd1.

Furthermore, in most cases it is not necessary to download all of the images for your architecture. The packages on the CDs are sorted by popularity: CD 1 contains the installation system and the most popular packages. CD 2 contains slightly less popular ones, CD 3 even less popular ones, etc

http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/#which-cd

I strongly suggest downloading the image using jigdo, is way faster....and you can get newer packages.

and you can boot with the cd 5 kernel by using the command bf24 at the first screen after bios boots the cd.

Why do you need cd 5 for a 2.4 kernel. I only downloaded cd1 and I got 2.4.18bf kernel.

About how long does it take to do a basic install. By basic imean a window manager (NOT KDE OR GNOME), XFree86, and Mozillia. Does it take as long as a gentoo install.

Thanks

Off the cd's about as long as any other distro. It's not like Gentoo where it compiles from source.

Gentoo should take much longer than Debian, because it has to compile everything and Debian doesn't.
With the Stage 3 ISO and GRP, however, installing Gentoo could be as quick as installing Debian.
