I cant get my Aumix to work, it crashes every time i try and start it up. Are there any known problems with it? Ive noticed many mandrake forums have problems with AC97 onboard chips, but i havent had any trouble, only with the software to change volume levels.
Perhaps a configuration file i can edit somewhere to increase the volume above 0?
Any help appreciated

mandrake comes default installed with alsa drivers, try using $alsa-mixer to adjust your settings, MM =mute use your arrow keys to move to each variable and adjust the volumes, master and PCM will be the main ones you want to worry about

You could try it from the command line, it can be used as ncurses mode as well:
root# aumix
tab, space and arrows to move about, don'tforget to save it
or use ~/.aumixrc
bascule@TheKript ~ $ cat .aumixrc

that doesnt seem to work for me. Which config files are edited when volume is changed, or is it just stored in the memory?

the file .aumixrc is the config file, one for each user. It won't be in your home directory if you haven't had aumix running yet. so:
[you@yourbox]$ touch .aumixrc
then open the file .aumixrc in a text editor (gedit maybe) and copy the example I posted above into it.
The numerical values between the : are left and right levels, change them to suit yourself. Anywhere between 1 and 100(not recommended), go for 80's in my opinion. Though I'm not sure if this will work if aumix hasn't been run before.
What "doesn't work for you" when you run aumix from the command line as root?
Did you try dkeav's suggestion of the ALSA mixer, what happened?

It seems the whole of Aumix is completely screwed, i wish i knew why. Its run once and then never ran again :(

You could go for the old "reinstall it" trick. Use the 'drake command centre => search aumix, take it out then put it back in, it might just work :D .
However if you run aumix from a terminal inside X does it give any error messages? If so post them.

umm seriously though, any mixer program will change your devices volume levels, so just use alsa-mixer, problem solved
