Try checking under the Internet section in the GNOME panel. Also I think there might be an NHF on it: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel And make a search for Modem-HOWTO in the search engines for additional technical help. Good luck! Prisoner 02-06-2001, 01:00 PM ok thankx 1 question can i use linux with free ISPs? if i can i'll do i search for free ISPs thankx again YaRness 02-06-2001, 02:40 PM Originally posted by Prisoner: can i use linux with free ISPs? every free isp i've taken the time to examine, you simple can't, not legally. most of the service agreements explicitly state somehow or another that you hafta be looking at their banners, or let them load their code onto your machine, etc. personally, free ISPs suck so much anyway that it's worth the 20 bucks a month for a pay one (i've had nothing but good connections with earthlink). now that being said, if you are still curious, you can search the forums, or use google, and i'm sure you can come up with lots of information about that. ColdPack 02-06-2001, 07:56 PM And being that Corel is debian-based, you can configure ppp to be used from the command line via pppconfig. I have had no end to troubles using kppp and gnomeppp, etc, and find that simply typing pon and poff at the command line is the best way to go. YMMV. Prisoner 02-06-2001, 08:07 PM now my computer cant find my modem what should i do? is there a program i can run to make linux find my modem i tried mount dev/modem but it said there is no file or directory and then i did mkdir dev/modem and it said no file named dev/modem and my kppp doesnt recognize my modem please help  navy-linux 02-06-2001, 11:32 PM Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but the mount command is used for mounting hard drives, cd-rom drives, floppies, etc. I use Mandrake 7.2 and it has a hardware configuration tool. It works pretty good with most of the common hardware out there. As for the free ISP. I use netzero and Bluelight. They both have a banner under windoze. They also send your user name and password encrypted when you log on. There is a program called raspy that will show you the encrypted info to use under Linux. Visit mountainmans web site for the link to raspy. http://www.geocities.com/mountainmancentral :p  FoBoT 02-06-2001, 11:55 PM Originally posted by YaRness: it's worth the 20 bucks a month for a pay one i used a "low-cost" dialup isp, Hawk (http://www.hawkcommunications.com) that worked fine with linux, @ $7.77/month just another option DrDebian 02-07-2001, 12:32 AM Originally posted by ColdPack: And being that Corel is debian-based, you can configure ppp to be used from the command line via pppconfig. This is indeed one of the most favourable options to dial-up. Another popular from the CLI would be wvdial, which also has a number of good autodetect abilities. justlinux.com
