I've installed a few apps that do not install icons for use with desktop shortcuts and the like eg Mozilla Thunderbird. I have gone about collecting suitable icons from the web and would like to copy them into the relevant directory to allow them to appear in the system icons/applications listing for future use. Anyone have any idea where they should be stored. I've run a search for *.xpm and it looks pretty much like icons are scattered (and some duplicated) across numerous directories.

it depends on what desktop environment you are using and where your distro installed the DE to.

in Gentoo, the default for Gnome icons is /usr/share/pixmaps and /usr/share/icons.

I'm running SuSE 8.2 Pro and KDE 3.1.1 on kernel 2.4.20-64GB-SMP
