Saving email from outlook on linux drive

Is there something strange about the way MS Outlook saves emails that would make it difficult to save on a linux network drive? I have my network running and am using SuSE linux 8.1 and Samba 2.2.5. At the moment, I have set permissions wide open (777) while I configure and get everything working. I have no problems working with files on the shared drives but if I want to save an email into a drive for storage from ms outlook on the win2k client machines, outlook tells me \\server\drive\file.eml Cannot access this file. Check security privileges over the network drive.

Has anyone come across this before? Any idea what is going on?

Hasn't anyone else experienced this?

I haven't !!!

Have you set the correct mountpoint permission options for the Samba mount? That is all I can think of.

Try mapping the share to a drive letter and telling Outlook to use that. It's worth a shot!

Okay, I seem to have Samba running just fine and all users on the network are able to open, save, modify and create files on the network drive (administered by Samba) with no problems. However, ms outlook still wont save to the network drive as an *.eml file. The user can save as a text file but not and *.eml file. This is thoroughly baffling!

Problem solved! In the end it was so simple, and could have been covered in the man files for Samba. The problem was the 'veto files parameter' for the Samba share. It seems that due to the Nimba virus, people decided to restrict users from saving outlook email files to their drives by default. I suppose this is quite sensible but a nuisance if they don't warn you about it. So, all you have to do if you want to be able to save outlook *.eml files to your drive is to remove the '/*.eml/ from the 'veto files parameter' in Samba.

I am really surprised that others haven’t experienced this since it is a default setting in Samba since at lease version 2.2.5.

It could be the JL members that actually read your question either do not use Samba or if they do, have not tried saving Outlook email to a Samba share.
