Is there any free software, similar to exceed that will allow this?
What do I need to do to the linux box to enable this?

You need a win32 x server, and you need to setup ssh on the linux box. Check the docs for X11 forwarding or just x forwarding.

you don't necissarily need ssh you can use telnet (which i don't recommend but it's probably already installed and setup..) :)

Another option may be 'vncviewer'. Have a look at it, it's free.

I would go with what rod suggested.
