I'm just looking for a quick response here, because I haven't really investigated the issue all that much due to time constraints. But, the problem is basically what I said in the subject. I get sound out of XMMS fine, but the volume control doesn't work at all. I also don't think it works in other apps (can't check right now), but I'll have to check that. My setup is:

2.4.1 kernel
es1370 module (SB PCI128, I know this is right) - and yes, it's loaded .. since I'm getting sound that should be obvious, though
the most recent version of XMMS (I forget what number, like 1.2.something), but I keep it updated with apt

Anybody tangle with this issue before? I've had it working on this box before (though not sure whether or not I had it working with Debian), and I can't remember when it was broken. TIA

If you're using the OSS Sound Driver, for output, go into preferences, output plugin, click the configure button, then click on the mixer tab, and make sure the "Volume controls master not PCM" is checked. (or if it is checked, uncheck it and see if there is a difference)

That's about the only thing I can think of. I hope this helps.

yea, does your user have permission to access /dev/mixer?
