I have just set up my box with SuSE Linux 8.2 on a Cable connection. I've set up the NIC and everything just fine. I've also made sure that my IP is being assigned (I had to move the NIC card to another slot... old machine) Anyway, I get the IP address, but I am unable to connect to any internet pages or ping anything with an FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name).

I would show you the output from ifconfig, but I would have to disconnect this machine (WinXP) to get the info on the linux box.

Thanks for any help.

Have you added your ISP dns servers to /etc/resolv.conf ??

Since I'm posting this from my Linux box, I'd say that it worked. Thanks a bunch!

Now I get to network the two computers together with my 4-port HUB. This is a bit off-subject, but I'd probably have to use the hub to connect the computers and use the USB cable so that I can connect the computers with the CAT-5, right?

Thanks again!

Makes perfect nonsense to me.

The hub would only transfer all of the data to both computers. This would cause a problem since I only have one IP address from my ISP and using two computers would make the ISP try to send two IP addresses which would just screw everything up. It should be possible to just share the internet connection with the XP computer. The way I would do that is use the cable modem's USB connection to receive the data from the Internet. I would then use my NIC to connect to the hub, and then the hub to the linux box's NIC.

The only problem with this is I still haven't gotten the network between the computers working yet (computers cannot see each other and only WinXP has an Internet connection)

I hope I've explained myself well enough. Thanks for all the help :)

I guess you would use winxp built in internet connection sharing thing.

For that matter, if you need to buy a hub, just get a broadband router instead. You would connect all of your machines to the router, and them connect the router to the cable modem. A couple of benefits of stand-alone routers like those from Linksys or Netgear are that the can perform NAT (allowing you to share 1 IP among all of your machines on the LAN) as well as port filtering. Both features give your network added protection from outside intruders.

Granted, you can set up one of your computers to serve the same function, but if the machine also serves as one of your normal workstations the security won't be as good as that provided by a dedicated device.

All quite true. I was just trying to figure out a solution with the HUB since I have it already. I might just look into a router though. It would be so much easier.

I do currently have ICS set up on the WinXP box, but Linux still isn't seeing it. I've tried having the Linux box get the IP dynamically from the Windows box. I've tried manually specifying 192.168.25.26. I think the only thing I haven't looked at was the default gateway. I have to get up in the morning, so I'm going to go to bed.

Thanks everyone for the input. :)

Check out the default gateway entries on the client machines; you might have to enter that manually (it would be the IP of the LAN-facing NIC on the XP ICS box, of course).

Also, can you at least ping from machine to machine (using IPs, not FQDNs)?

nope, can't even ping the IP :( I'm going to try the default gateway, but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go with a router. I've already found one that's not too expensive and will work for my purposes :)
