Geoff 04-23-1999, 04:41 AM redhat, because it installs easily for newbies like I was when I installed it http://www.linuxplanet.com/discussion/smile.gif i haven't tried any other distributions so I don't know. FamMan 04-25-1999, 03:33 AM Redhat is the easiest to install and setup. It practically does everything for you. I am trying S.U.S.E. 6.0 at the moment and it is harder to deal with than RedHat. The only good part about that is that I am learning alot. Eccentric 04-28-1999, 05:36 PM I'm using RedHat, but have heard alot of good things about Debian. Funny thing is, I'm always seeing rpms and no debs. Redhat 6.0 comes with Gnome and KDE. Interesting! anacron 07-02-2002, 10:54 PM I like Mandrake 8.2 myself. Okie 07-03-2002, 06:08 AM Redhat & Slackware are my two favorites... z0mbix 07-03-2002, 06:23 AM :D Debian :D 1) Debian - cos it's mature 2) Slackware - cos it's simple 3) Gentoo - cos it's exciting Saptech 07-03-2002, 06:31 AM Use Slack and you neva go back! z0mbix 07-03-2002, 07:03 AM Originally posted by Saptech Use Slack and you neva go back! I did ;) although I still love Slackware, I just prefer debian :) Dave2001 07-03-2002, 08:22 AM :D Debian :D Icarus 07-03-2002, 10:44 AM Red Hat is nice because it is very easy to setup. It is a nice learning distro also, the built in management tools are just OK so you get to learn a lot about hand editing files :D Of course yesterday I did use netconfig to change the network info on a Linux box and it worked very well, didn't even have to reboot...370 days and counting on Red Hat 5.2 (Apollo):D Now I need to get the net admin to update the DNS records for it :p I have also used Gentoo and Slackware (kinda) Gentoo is real nice but takes forever to setup because it downloads all the parts and compiles them (makes it fast in the end, but paint dries faster) Never really got a working Slackware system, didn't try very hard though. I've been looking into trying Debian sometime soon... scanez 07-03-2002, 01:24 PM Originally posted by Eccentric Funny thing is, I'm always seeing rpms and no debs. Most major apps will have debs available. If not on their site then certainly on the debian apt-get mirrors ;) Check packages.debian.org to see what packages are on these mirrors. Also note that even if the app is not on these mirrors, there are MANY unofficial mirrors you can use. Redhat 6.0 comes with Gnome and KDE. Interesting! Most distros come with gnome and kde... kapwfm 07-06-2002, 12:27 AM I used to like Mandrake...until the latest versions. I thought the 7.x series of Mandrake was better. I want to try RedHat 7.3. Funny thing is...I've had the CD's for over a month...just haven't done anything with them yet. :D Psycho 07-06-2002, 01:26 AM Libranet 2.0 is based on Debian's Woody and they've done a really nice configuration of it. I just saw in the newsletter that they've made a download available. Yay They're calling it Libranet essential edition, it looks like pretty much the whole thing minus Star Office. You can always apt-get anything else from Woody. It's pretty nice for newbie & not so newbie alike.:D danrees 07-06-2002, 05:07 AM Debian Woody at the moment, but I'm pretty fickle :D I'll happily use Debian or Red Hat, but don't mind SuSE either. Debian is just much easier to keep up to date (and less hassle if you know what you're doing). Famman - it comes as no surprise that you're finding SuSE 6.0 difficult, as there has been 6.1, 6.3, 6.4, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 since then :p Try downloading 8.0 or 7.3 from ftp.suse.com (use a mirror), and you might be able to make a fair comparison... carlywarly 07-06-2002, 06:30 AM Have a look at the date of the first posting on this thread - 04-25-1999 I think this is a case of undead threads resurrected by a software error. Ludootje 07-06-2002, 08:03 AM Libranet (and therefore debian I guess) but if you're new to linux, you shouldn't base your choice of distro on the answers in this topic *at all*... a favorite distro mostly isn't an easy to use distro. get SuSE for a userfriendly distro, and check distrowatch.com edit: woops just saw carly's post lol I guess (s)he isn't new to linux anymore ;) danrees 07-06-2002, 08:44 AM Originally posted by carlywarly Have a look at the date of the first posting on this thread - 04-25-1999 I think this is a case of undead threads resurrected by a software error. Lol, no wonder farmman was using SuSE 6.0 :D Psycho 07-06-2002, 11:56 PM :o The thread that wouldn't die, should have picked up on the dated Linux versions. lol :o Timothy L. Miller 07-07-2002, 01:08 AM I used to like Mandrake 8.2 best. But since trying libranet, I've got to admit I'm in love with it now. SO nice. Much more up to date than standard Debian (although by no means cutting edge), and WAY easier to install and get working. I'm also trying to learn Slackware, but so far, it's a no-go. justlinux.com
