hey, i'm completely new to linux, i've been meaning to try it out for some time though...i decided on redhat 9, so i got the ISOs, burned the images, etc etc.
when i went to boot from the cd, i got the first page, where it askes to push <enter> for graphical installation or to type linux just text <enter> or something like that for text installation.
i hit enter, and after a few seconds of a blank screen, i got a screen with a bunch of numbers and such on it, and a message saying i got a kernel panic. it said "tried to kill init" or something, i'm not sure of the exact message.
am i doing something wrong? how do i get it to install?
any help would be greatly appreciated
TIA

have you tried using redhat's media checker at the beginning? that's a strange place to have a kernel panic occur.

Could you also tell us a bit about the hardware you are attempting to install on?
Have you tried text mode instead of the default graphical?
Some boot/install options you can try. I would advise you to try the power management ones first.

thanks, i'll try the text option, and i'll try typing in 'mediacheck' as well, and i'll reply how it went.
in the meantime, here is the hardware i am installing it on:
Soyo kt400 dragon ultra mobo
MSI geforce fx5200 tdr128
creative 5.1 soundblaster
an old tv tuner card
as for my IDEs, on the first slot i have an 80gb WD hdd with windows xp as my master and a 15GB WD hdd with 98 se as my slave.
in the second slot i have an LG cdrw master and an old cdrom slave.
in the third slot i have a mobile hdd rack, inside of it is a 15GB hdd, this is the one i plan on putting redhat on.
thanks for your earlier suggestions, i'll go try those options right now
once again, TIA

Since you have 2 HD's and 2 cdroms making 4 IDE devices, what is the mobile hdd connected to?

ok, i tried typing in 'mediacheck' and it said it couldnt find it on the kernel, so i tried 'APM=off' and it said the same thing. i went into options and it had 'linux ___' for all the options, so i went back to the main screen and typed 'linux mediacheck' and i got the same kernel panic as before, so i restarted and tried 'linux apm=off' and i got the kernel panic again.
could it be a bad iso? i got them from mirrors.kernel.org

Could well be.
mirrors.kernel.org has Redhat iso's?
Check the md5sum's for the iso images.

k, i checked it, and it matches...
so does that mean that its not an iso problem, its something else?

Have you tried disabling power management in the bios or any other bios settings?
So what is the mobile HDD attached to?

sorry, didnt see your earlier post...... i have 4 IDE slots on my motherboard, the mobile rack is attached to the third w/o a slave, and the fourth is empty.
where in bios would i be able to disable power management? i hadnt considered doing any bios changes

It should be under the main 'Power' menu.
Just check around ALL the bios settings to see if there is anything else besides power management that enabling/disabling/adjusting that might help.
You could search www.google.com/linux for your motherboard model to see if others have had similiar problems.

also check out the RH 9 HCL & RH 9 system requirements
see my sig:cool: do the images mount when you put them in your CDROM drive? what software did you burn your ISO's with?

i met all the system requirements, and i burned the cd's with nero6.
when i put the CDs in my drive (while running xp), i get a browse folder. should i get something other than that?
according to linux google, there dont seem to be any problems with the soyo. i couldnt find much matching my video card model.

i was checking here (http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/) for my mobo and video card, and in the manufacturer list it doesnt show MSI nor Soyo. does this mean that they arent compatible, or that they just arent listed?

This could just mean that the stock RH kernels do'nt support that hardware, but that does not mean that we ca'nt get it going with some work. let me do some G4Ling and see what I can find out in the mean time take a look here http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Hardware-HOWTO/motherboards.html

Another member just posted a similiar question about a kernel panic on installation and it turned out to be faulty memory.
If you have more than one memory module, remove one at a time and try the installation again. If you have any spare, replace and also try again.

If you can't temporarily switch out the memory with another memory stick, at least run a memory test. memtest86 I believe is one of the recommended ones.

hey, i'm back, iknow this is a huge bump but i've been busy lately....
anyway, i ran memtest86, and my ram passed all the tests.
i actually tried installing debian instead, but i couldnt get a gui working, i had problems with x server, but anyway, i technically got debian installed..... and i got knoppix-std running as well, so its definitely a redhat problem. i would be asking how to get debian working, but i really wanna use redhat, so i decided to bump this thread up.
anyway, what are your suggestions? TIA

have you tried using a live CD distro like knoppix to see if it picks up your hardware?, if that works you could install that to your HD. I would give knoppix a try fand see if it sees your hardware:D it may also give us an idea of what your problem with RH is. sorry for the late reply I have been installing testing and testing new distro's myself

yeah i've tried knoppix....it loaded, only problem was i couldnt connect to the net, and i don't know how to put it onto a hard drive permanently.
also, i went into bios and disables onboard RAID, and i got past the kernel panic i was getting before, but now i get a black screen after its booted....
after it says 'loading anaconda, the redhat installer.......' then some other stuff about xserver, the screen goes black.
a friend of mine sggested turning off plug&play, but i couldn't find that anywhere in my bios, i probably just looked over it or something though.

so you were able to get past your kernel panic if you disabled onboard raid? when you get the black screen are you then droped to a $ prompt?

no, its just a black screen..... i left it on for 5-10 minutes to see if it would change, but it didnt

I would suggest doing the text install then. It would appear that X is having problems with your hardware.
Don't worry, after it is installed, there are ways to configure X so that it will work with your hardware. :)

Hey I have on board RAID on my Asus-kr7a-RAID mobo. I have never got red hat to install on a hard disk that was connected to the "extra" two IDE interfaces that were controlled by the RAID chipset.

Infact many of your problem sound all too familiar! I worked around this problem simply by installing Red Hat on a HD that was connected to my "Normal" IDE interfaces which are controlled by the IDE chip set. I swaped a windows drive, putting the RH9 install on my Primary IDE interface as slave and put a Windows 2000 drive on my RAID interfaces.
All seemed to work well. Try it...you could simply try disconnecting all hard drives but the one your putting Linux on and set that as the primary master and see if your STILL haveing your problems....
Im not sure why installing Linux on a on-board RAID controller is a pain (I tried RH9 and Debain)
