Hi,
I am new to linux. I am running Mandrake9.0 and W98SE. I need to reformat W98SE and it won't let me because of the partitioning. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

Moving to the Installation forum since 'Post your forum bugs here' is for just that... posting problems with the JustLinux forums.

What exactly are you trying to do... format or resize the Win98 partition?

Mdwatts,
I am trying to format it. I put the boot disk(W98SE) in and it boots up fine , When I go to format C; drive (which is partitioned mostly to Linux Mandrake) it will not let me. It mentions something about using a 3rd party to format it. Hope you can help me. I am trying to break away from Windows . I keep getting an hour glass on boot up (once I select windows option instead of Linux) so I thought I would format it. Now I can't even get windows to complete boot up.

Thanks for reply,

Mike

Have you tried formatting the partition from within Mandrake? If I recall, the DiskDrake partitioning utility can manipulate FAT32 partitions.

If not DiskDrake, you could use a third-party app like Partition Magic. But try DD first.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Can I find DD on my system? Or do I need to check on my installation disks? I will try to locate it and do a format . I wll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi you guys,
I am finally running W98SE and Linux 9.1 on the same 40G hard drive. I formatted my 40G and then partitioned it to 10G. I then went and installed my 2 CDs for 9.1. It installed ok except it would not access my modem so that I could not get on the internet. A friend of mine had a 3rd CD he believes was missing from the set that I got with the Linux Format magazine. I am a newbie to Linux. I sure hope I can get used to it soon. There is so much to know. How to uninstall and install, how to burn a CD, etc. Just wanted to keep you posted and Thanks.

Glad to see you got your problem resolved.

There is an enormous amount of Linux documentation available on the web. Start with Mandrake's own online documentation, read the JL Help Files, review as many threads as you can and search www.google.com/linux for just about any Linux topic including guides/tutorials/how-to's etc.
