I have a Hayes compatible satellite modem that I want to use to dial into a PPP server.

I just finished installing RedHat Linux 9.0 on my laptop and am now trying to configure the modem. I understand that I should configure the modem using wvdial. Is that right?

I ran wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf and it seems to be stuck. wvdialconf scanned all available serial ports, I don't understand this, it lists lots of ports - S0 to S31, SA0 to SA2, SC0 to SC3, SI0 to SI15, SR0 to SR287, USB0 to USB15 and doesn't do anything after this. Any suggestions on why it should behave this way? Is it stuck?

I have a laptop with just one 9 pin serial port. I tried the following commands
setserial -g /dev/ttyS0 returns /dev/ttyS0, UART: unknown, Port:0x03f8, IRQ:4
setserial -g /dev/ttyS1 returns /dev/ttyS1, UART: unknown, Port:0x02f8, IRQ:3

Am I missing something?

I just need to setup the modem such that it can dial out via PPP. Am I going in the right direction?

Your help is highly apreciated.

Thanks,
Ruchika
