Sorry to have to state the obvious... but

Can you play other types of music? Or hear any sounds at all? Might be worth checking those connections again...

In the XMMS preferences > options window, make sure that the output tab has OSS highlighted and try again.

Is the sound system set up? Check with the lsmod command that audio drivers are loaded. If not, you'll have to pull them down and compile them.

I run Slackware 9, but I've used both RedHat 7.3 & 8 and Mandrake 9.1 in the past and from what I can gather, all of them had MP3 support automatically built in. Perhaps if you got rid of XMMS and the plug-in you had and try reinstalling from an RPM on your installation CDs then you might have more luck.

Let me know how you get on.

Red Hat Linux does not come with MP3 support by default ever since version 8.

Do a forum search on: red hat mp3 and you will find numerous posts on the subject that will help you.

you might find an alternative mp3 player.

I don't believe it depends on what player do you use...

Ah - my mistake. Apologies. I'm now a Slacker after all ;-)

Best thing to do would probably install from source. Grab a tar.gz version of XMMS and go hunting for the bits to go with it. Just remember to uninstall your current version first.

You could always try Mandrake Linux - I found that (strangely) easier to work with than RedHat when I installed it a few weeks ago. And I KNOW that comes with MP3 support compiled into XMMS (at least version 9.1 did).

If you can't download the ISOs (i.e. don't have broadband) then there are usually plenty of places to pick up the disks from. I personally use www.uselinux.co.uk since the service is excellent.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
