Ok, this is the problem:

I have 2 computers, one is connected to the internet via a 56k external modem. One is upstairs. Usually (read: in Windows 98SE) the two are connected via two Netgear MA311 network cards (prism 2.5 chipset according to Suse 8.2, both the systems can dual boot, uses the orinoco_pci driver in suse). The machines are connected via a wireless ad-hoc network using channel 1 and connection speed is set to auto.

The machine that is connected to the net runs Windows 99% of the time with internet connection sharing enabled.

How do I get the internet upstairs via the wireless network (no solutions that involve me buying more stuff please!).

Which version of Windows is running on the one? Depends on what version you are using, I think they started including internet sharing in Win98SE...I know 2000 defenatly has this feature.

If ad-hoc is working fine, I would think internet sharing is the only trouble spot you have.

Both dual booting 98se and Suse 8.2 for now, XP will be an option from tomorrow. The wireless network is setup in windows, but not in Linux (at least not properly, can't even ping between the two)

Probally be easiest to set the Windows PC up as a base station.
I've never done this and can't find much documentation right now (I know it's out there, but don't know where...)

If it's an external modem, just move it. ;-)

Do you have a DHCP server on your wireless network? In windows, there's actually a protocol that auto-assigns some IP addresses for smaller networks (or so I've heard, correct me if I'm wrong.) In linux, it's either full-on DHCP or static IP. Is your IP entered correctly, as well as the subnet mask and such on your Linux box?

Soon as you get that running, the simplest thing to do is just what you'd do on a wired network- use a proxy server on the win box.

^^Here's a good one. AnalogX does good stuff.^^

Then just set up the rest of your programs to go out via that proxy, and you're done.

No phone sockets upstairs, else I would have done that :)

Be careful with that AnalogX proxy, as it's got some security issues with it. Last time I used it, it opened up ports insecurely and allowed an intruder to spam newsgroups from my machine. The cable company terminated my service with no notice. Quite likely this hole has been patched since then, but it's wise to monitor your network activity closely.

A big thank you to all who helped me on this. For some reason the wireless card didn't want to work until my wired card was set to dhcp (which stopped it from doing anything).

I'm posting this from upstairs (yay me) :D
