I'm using Mandrake 8 at 640x480 (at least thats the size of background images that fit)

When I had windows I used 800x600 and I couldn't get anymore. After switching to Linux for some reason I didn't notice the change in res until I started cropping images to fit as a wallpaper. What is a safe way to change res, without risking my getting stuck with a blurry screen if i accidently chose a res that is too high? I have kde and gnome and most of their configuration programs installed too, but I mostly use WindowMaker.

I use redhat and not mandrake, however I'm pretty sure the mandrake has the Xconfigurator utility. This will let you specify the resoultions and color depths avaible to X. It should also have an option to test the new resoultion(s) before you actually use them in X to help avoid problems. One word of caution however, I'd run this from the console (make sure X isn't running) since I've had problems before when running both at the same time.

Console...oh...hehe, I almost forgot that existed, now that I have mandrake. I'd better do some reading before I play around in it. All I remember is how to shutdown the computer from the console...and that there is some "magic" words that people tell you to type as a joke and it deletes your hard drive.

One problem...I can't find xconfigurator.
I typed: xconfig, xconfigure, xconfigurator, config, configure, configurator, xconfigurater, configurater...
I looked on both of my Mandrake disks for it.
I looked in KDE System Control, KDE Control Center, GDM configurator, LinuxConf, Mandrake Control Center, User Conf, User Drake.
I also looked in the Mandrake Documentation and got stuck in a maze of menus inside KDE Quickbrowser==>System Configuration...

Just as Anti-Void posted it...

Xconfigurator

Now why would AV capitolize the X in the middle of a sentence? ;)

You could try xf86config on the command line.
Also if you should change to a resolution that is all blurry you could hit.
Control + Alt Backspace and that will shut down the xserver and put you into console mode. Have fun.

Thanks everybody for the help. I do have xf86config and I'll do some careful reading of its man page.

I tried xf86config, but it wants to change many other things. I don't want to mess anything else up. I have tried wmres.c which is used by WindowMaker, but upon compilation it cannot find the proper librarys and I can not find them myself to tell it where to look for them. I used Kfind in a number of different ways.
