Problem playing Wavs & MP3s

Hi.

I can play music CD's fine but when I try to play a wav or mp3 I get the following error message.
'Connection to the soundserver failed, make sure that artsd is really running'

Any idea what the problem is ??

ok, bit of diagnostics here. from the command line (and i dont mean a terminal window), do the following as root.

cat /path/to/wave.wav > /dev/dsp

if you here the sounds..good. then try the same thing as a user. if that works, then even better.

If these things work then it means your problems are based on problems in higher level software. get back to us.
