Hello all,

I am using apt-get and Synaptic with RedHat 9 and loving it!

My only problem thus far is that I can't add any websites to the repository list. Are the default entries enough, or are there RPM's out there that I'm missing out on?

Anyway, when I go into the repository list in Synaptic's GUI and enter the info for the new one and click add; the list is increased by an entry, but the entry is blank. When I hit OK, and go back into the list, my "new entry" is gone.

I have also tried editing the sources.list file using vim, but I can't save my changes since the file is read-only.......yah, I'm a noob.:D

This is only the first step in a long list of problems/tasks I have to do....funny how one thing leads to another in Linux....

Here's my sources.list file just for the 'ell of it.

[ebradley@localhost apt]$ cat sources.list

You can't 'just add websites' to APT, you need repositories
The entries look like in the sources.list file

rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ redhat/9/i386 os updates freshrpms

It's difficult to search and find any additional repositories, I always just stumble onto new ones with out looking :)

This review has a listing for one for RH8 (http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/docs/howto.txt) there might be a RH9 listing there also...

Thanks mahdi,

I understand the format with which the repositories need to be entered, my problem stems from the actual entering process.

The add repository GUI in Synaptic has three data entry fields: one for URL, one for distribution and one for section(s).

I enter the appropriate section of the repository into the appr. field, click add and.....bonk.

blech.

thanks,

you might have figured this out already but...
with synaptic you hit the add button BEFORE filling in the blanks. seems weird but when you hit add it creates a blank record that you then can edit.
