Recently, I have been trying to install Redhat 9 on my system, The first time I tried, It installed perfectly without any trouble. But the way I configured that install i did not like, so i decided to wipe the drive and install it again, and it didn't work, so I tried again, and it didn't work.........

Every time I try to install I get an error message while installing the packages: "There was an error installing the package *, this can indicate..., this is a fatal error and install will now shutdown"

So finally i decided to try another drive, instead of installing on my second HD, I resized my Win98 partition and tried to install it on the free space, no such luck, finally I did a low level (writes all 0's to the drive) format on my second drive and used the maxtor diagnostic tool to check it, everything is fine, so I tried again with the second drive and again, no dice. That's how i ended up here, in the hands on the justlinux forums.

I am installing off CDs I burned, I have run the media check and everything passed.
I have checked the MD5SUMs on the iso files, they match.
I have re-burned the CDs.
The CDs are clean.
Ihe CD-ROM drive is clean.

These errors occur on different packages each time, on different CDs, in different times while installing packages.

Each time i have chosen the "install everything" option for packages.

my system:
Promise Ultra 133 card (Both HDs Attached)
256 Ram
1.2 Gig Duron
80 gb Win HD
20 gb Linux HD
Generic CD-ROM
Leadtek CD-RW (The CDs were burned on an Imation at 12x)

You might be having trouble with your memory. If you can, try different memory. Sometimes failing memory can cause some strange behavior. Also, you may want to try not using the Promise card. I had enough trouble with mine I took it out of my system. Things work alot better now.

Good Luck,
Ted.

Well, Actually, for some reason, any hard drive that is connected to the primary IDE channel on my mobo gets corrupted, i use the second for my cd-roms but i geuss i could put the cd-roms on the promis card and the HDs on the 2nd IDE channel

It sounds like you are having some problems with your system. You might want to start looking around for another system before that one dies.

Good Luck,
Ted.

I would try 2 things:
1. Update bios-if update is available from motherboard mfg.
2. Update chipset drivers in Windows for the chipset you have. Your chipset driver may have become corrupted which is why you can't use primary IDE channel. The linux chipset drivers may work OK, have you tried using that channel in Linux?
