I have the mandrake 7.2 complete, my problem is when I install as soon as I get to where you press the OK button for doing the partition, the button wont push, it's froze, cant go any further. So if I do the lnx4win install instead, it seems like all is going well, but then upon reboot, I choose to boot to linux, and I just get the welcome to linux,and a bunch of white words on black background then it stops, and stays put.nothen can be typed in, just a non flashing curser. any ideas would be much appreiciated. heres what I got. Compaq (unfortunatly) 500 celeron,128ram,win98,voodoo4500,Also just to make sure it wasnt me, I tried it on my daughters "OLD" amd 200, it installed fine, but was so slow, that I could literally eat lunch waiting for something to open when item was selected. is it because compaq has no way to disable pnp? :(

its not that compaq cant disable the pnp, its the bios, and it should anyway.. I have a presario 7970 (Love the thing) and I have pnp disabled. maybe you should flash the bios if possible with the latest and greatest..
don't trash compaqs...

Hi again, I thought of the "flash" thing, Compaq says I dont need it, I have the Presario 5724, anyway do you actually think the reason I cant get this thing working is the Bios, or something else? why does it freeze when it gets to the partition part? :confused:

It's possible you need to change the
[Large Disk Access Mode] to "Other" rather than "DOS" - anything is possible - maybe you should try doing a text install (I dont know if Mandrake offers that) but its worth a shot.. Choose manual partitioning - create the partitions yourself, see if that gets you any further..
hope some of this helps -

<shameless self promotion>
Someone here, I'm not naming any names (me) wrote a good NHF on using fdisk (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/fdisk_nhf/Fdisk.html) for doing the manual partitioning that freaker is talking about.
