hey somebody help me plz. i install my newly HDD (Seagate ST340016A) as hda, it detect n works normally on BIOS till i install mandrake 9 n Ext3. suddenly 3 days after the monitor show warning"kenel panic:no swap.....device /hda/ not available etc" i not wrt it....too fast n soon turn black
after restart BIOS not recognize HDD anymore...the motor still run smooth but looks like no HDD on it.Note i always shutdown it corrctly.Thanx for help.
I can assume you are not native english, neither do I, but could you please rephrase your post so we can try to help you.
From what I understood, which wasn't much, I recommend checking that your HD is well connected.
Mandrake has nothing to do with BIOS not detecting your HD.

If BIOS is not recognizing your drive then your drive may be defective. Goto the manufacturers website and see if they have a test program for the drive. You will need windows for the test. If it fails that and the drive is under warranty, send it back.
Check all your cables, both data and power, first just in case something worked loose.
If BIOS can't see it, Linux or windows will not see it either. That info is loaded from BIOS by both OS's. The BIOS must see it first.
You may want to check your BIOS settings and set them to 'auto' for Primary Master. Save settings and pray.
Hope it's a loose cable! Good luck.

:p thanks for the instant reply and sorry for my language, hope u all not getting headache. Ive checked all i know, from change other IDE cable, power, BIOS setup, etc but seems the drive completely dead (although the motor still run). in this forum i would ask u all, what HDD is the best for all use (i use comp.for office, database, n a little programing)?
here my spec:
MB ECSK7S5A ;RAM 1024 MB; prosesor AMD 1800+; CDRW Samsung 48x24x48; soundcard onboard; HDD Seagate 40 GB (the broken one)

In my experiences I've seen the non booting hard drive not recognize by BIOS but detected and working under linux.
AFAIK the BIOS is only used for loading the bootloader.
I had to search for the doc, I knew I read it somewhere :) , hope you like it.

Maxtor, IBM are IMHO the best. That said, seagate, quantam, western digital, are very good drives too. If the price was about the same I would pick the one that turns the fastest and has the most cache.
Keep in mind that things do break. That could have happened to any brand of drive. Even expensive SCSI server type drives crashes sometimes.
I'm no moderator here, but you might should have posted a reply instead of starting a new thread. My opinion.
Try froogle.google.com to see if you can find a replacement. Most drives aren't that bad nowadays, pricewise that is.

I've never seen a hard drive that BIOS doesn't see that worked. I do see the message that Linux acceses the BIOS for the drive info for the hard drives and CD's. How would it know if you had one if it didn't ask?
Maybe but it's new to me. Maybe it's been to long since I worked on fusers.

Most drives are very good nowadays but I tend to stay away from Seagate and Western Digital. I'd very bad experiences with Seagates and I've heard pretty bad comments about WD.
I prefer Maxtor (which am using now :) ) and Quantum. IBM i can't comment on but i've heard they are pretty good.
Like dale wrote, things do break!.
About the BIOS thing, im not a guru or anything near that, but since Eric Raymond (the author of the doc) knows a lot more than I do, I have to rely on his and other autors writings don't I? :) . Maybe, one day, I'll write my own ;)
Best wishes to you all

It's funny about that Western Digital. I have friends 40Gb Western Digital that died. It was two years old. BTW, BIOS didn't recognize it and Linux wouldn't mount it. BIOS said "NONE WD400". Linux said it didn't exist. I personally wouldn't buy WD, I prefer Maxtor or IBM, Samsung if the price is right.
Oh, BTW the drive took the motherboard with it. It will recognize the new drives I tested it with but will not complete format. New mobo, memory (different kind) and HD on the way. Yea newegg
