Image opening speed

When i use ACDsee in windows, openig image is almost instantaneous (sp?), even really large images open with the smallest delay. When i boot into linux an use gqview images take ages to load compared to in windows. Why is this? Is it a linux issue or a gqview issue? I am using mandrake 8 on a PIII 500.

Try compupic, if it's still slow then there's something else that needs some tweaking in your Linux install. Have you timed your disk access? Made sure you're using dma? Do you have decent video drivers for your video card? Compupic is pretty cool, it's very similar to acdsee and possibly better.

My drivers are the ones that mandrake installs by default for my card (Rage 128). I have done no hard drive tweaking using hdparm or anything else. I didn't think either of these would be a problem because 1) images files are relatively small for getting off the disk 2)

I know this is gonna suck to hear but have you recompiled your kernel and changed boot images yet?

There's all sorts of really easy steps you can take to increase performance just by reading the help next to the options. I did this and fixed all sorts of performance and driver config issues that RH 7.1 couldn't fix from a packaged install.

And remember - you can have multiple kernels (boot images) to boot with so if you **** it up just load the old kernel!

I'm starting to love this whole Linux thing lol.

I didn't think either of these would be a problem because 1) images files are relatively small for getting off the diskYou didn't say how big your images were so I was just covering one of the posiblities :)

If it's fast enough for you with compupic then I wouldn't worry about tweaking anything.
