I just got a P4P800 Deluxe and installed Mandrake 9.1 on it. Everything went smooth except for 2 things:

- The sound is detected by default but there's no sound. XMMS and other audio apps play songs normally except that there's no sound coming out of the speakers :p I tried selecting different drivers but no use. I also compiled and installed the driver downloaded from Asus site but that has the same problem. It says that the Alsa mixer is muted by default and I have unmuted it, but I still can't get any sound.

- I could compile and install the 3com 3c2000 LAN driver fine. insmod, ifconfig, adsl-xxxx worked ok too. However although I did a make and a make install, the driver doesn't seem to be installed properly. I don't get it enabled at bootup, I have to manually go to the folder where I compiled the driver, ifconfig it and insmod it. What should I do to get it automatically load the driver at startup ?

Many thanks in advance :)

I don't mean to bother you with a answer to your question but you have the same chipset as me.. I have the MSI Neo 2 -LS motherboard with the i865PE chipset and having a hell of a hard time installing Mandrake 9.1 on the system.. How is your setup comfigure fro Hard drive and CD Rom's.. I have a serial ATA and two CD rom's.. Can you help me out on that.. I can't get it installed...

Search the JL forums for 'sound /dev/dsp permission' and see if any of those apply to your problem.

Ensure you have PnP OS disabled in the bios as that can cause modules/drivers to not be loaded for certain PCI devices.

You can add

alias eth0 <module>

to /etc/modules.conf and then run

depmod -ae

(both as root)

One thing about Mandrake and sound- under the audio mixer, they seem to turn off sound by default. Why? The world may never know. Also, is that intergrated LAN you're trying to use, or a seperate card? If you have onboard LAN, and are not using it, maybe you could try disabling it in the BIOS.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for the replies, I got the onboard LAN to work now :) It's a 3com Gigabit LAN, btw, DSwain. Added alias eth0 3c2000 (the .o file is already in the proper location) and it worked :)

Working on the sound atm...

If you have SATA drive then I believe you will have to have a hell of a hard time :p as the SATA is native in the ICH5R chipset and that is not supported natively by kernel 2.4.21 that Mandrake 9.1 uses yet.

I only have standard IDE ATA100 drives.

As i said before, under mandrake they turn off sound by default. If you go to the audio section (if under KDE) and then the audio mixer, you just turn it on in there, and it should work fine.

I've installed MDK many times and sound is always on by default

Anyway I've checked all of these mixers and volume controls. They are all turned on, but I still can't get any sound.

Hm, well that's how it's been for me, and many other people on this fourm. Interesting, sadly i don't know anything else, maybe look up the chipset on google.com/linux and get drivers or something? even though you probably tried that already, you never know.

Hi again

After making sure that I have unmuted everything, I was pulling my hair out wondering why this pos won't work... Suddenly, among my desperate searches, there pops up a thread where a guy plugs his speakers in the microphone port to test. I thought that was funny, but tried it anyway. Guess what, the ****ing thing works in my LineIn port ! :p   I think this might have something to do with the fact that this is a 5.1 onboard sound configuration, but I have no idea how to change it. Any suggestion ? :)
