Alright, how is everybody. Im a linux newbie so im having a great deal of trouble with the sound issue so hopefully someone here can offer some assistance. I just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my computer just to tinker around with it because ive never used linux before in my life. Everything so far is working great except i cannot seem to get sound to work. My soundcard is a Soundblaster PCI 512.

I went to the creative web site ( Creative Labs (http://www.creative.com) ) and unfortunately, they do not have any commercial driver support for linux. However, they did redirect me to an opensource linux driver development page ( Creative Open Source Project (http://opensource.creative.com/) ) where, from my understanding, i must download, compile, and install EMU10K1. Ive downloaded, extracted and tried to compile the code using all the readme docs, but every time i do it i get this error...

"make -Cscripts
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/jason/Documents/emu10k1-v0.20a/scripts'

/lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise/build directory does not exist. Please edit the file 'config'
in this directory and set KERNEL_SOURCE to the correct location of your
kernel source.

You are currently running kernel version 2.4.21-0.13mdkenterprise, the source code should
be for this version.

make[1]: *** [get_version] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/jason/Documents/emu10k1-v0.20a/scripts'
make: *** [opts] Error 2
[jason@ip68-104-5-65 emu10k1-v0.20a]$
"

???

i must reiterate that i am a complete newbie. i tried reading other docs also but i havent gotten those to work either. If someone could help me i would greatly appreciate it. Also, once it is compiled...how do i install to get working sound? Thanx a bunch

Sounds like you need to install your kernel source. I don't know how to do that in Mandrake, though. You can try to find out, search the internet for how, look at mandrakes site, or wait until someone who knows how to replies.

Until I scrolled down and noticed you had posted, I was going to first suggest.

Check to see if any soundcard related modules are loaded using 'lsmod'.

If so, check the permissions on the sound related devices in /dev.

And then ensure the volume levels are adjusted and nothing is muted in the sound mixer.

Just the standard JL questions that are posted for these types of problems. :D
