Hi...
As you can see, I am new. I am totaly new to Linux, in this case, Mandrake 8.1.

I have installed Mandrake 8.1 (works fine...although I can't seem to change the timezone/keyboard/mouse/ at the end of the installation). I chose KDE at the end of the setup. Although I don't really know which one is better, KDE or GNOME.

I did notice something though, at the top of my screen, it says something like:

" BETA "
"MANDRAKE LINUX Installation 8.1"

Doest that mean my Mandrake is BETA? or is it just the Installation program that is BETA? or is it BOTH?

After that, I restarted my PC, cool, everything works fine and dandy... a cool OS boot choice menu appeared and I entered on "LINUX" (first choice).

Then, I am stuck with the DOS like prompt command. Is this right?

So I typed 'startx' and it returns me with an error saying could not load mouse folder or something like that; and brings me back to this DOS-like command prompt.

I'm quite frustrated as I have re-install 8.1 so many times now...

P.S. i can just install other Linux distributions if you suggest me any, but i would really like to have my problem solved first, if we really can't, then i'll change.

I have Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB.

I CAN use my mouse during the installation.

And one other thing, after i typed 'startx', it goes to a series of commands, then to a brownish white screen with an 'X' on the center of the screen. After that, it booted me to the DOS-like command prompt again.

If I type 'startx' again, it will repeat the whole same thing again.

Are you using the 'Expert Install Mode'? I know my distro gives me control over everything using expert install.

It may allow you to make the necessary changes to get the mouse working.

I'm using HP Pavilion 8526.

I have 2 drives. C and D. 16 Gb and 10 Gb.
In drive C, i have installed Windows ME.
In drive D, i have Windows XP installed.
I then use Partition Magix 7.0 to divide my drive D into a 7 and 3 Gb partition.

After that, I loaded Linux Mandrake installation 1 to my CD Rom drive and restart my computer.

"Press F1 for more help or ENTER to continue installation".
I pressed ENTER.

I chose RECOMMENDED installation and US English at the language.

As i said before, I can use both my Microsoft Natural Keybard and Microsoft USB INtellimouse Explorer during the setup.

At the end of the installation, there was this little box with 4 rows, there were keyboard, mouse, timezone, and one other thing. I can't change ANY of them. Weird.

So, i just continue...
Automatic for the LAN/Ethernet Network.

Restart,
Boot menu
Chose linux (first of the list)

starting to load.
go into this fancy splash loader.
loads the windows-like and failed.
loads the dos-like instead.

i log-in, then type 'startx'.
tries to load windows-like twice, and fail.
loads the dos-like instead.

it will repeat the whole same thing over and over again.

it says can't load mouse folder, continuing, and attempting to shutdown X server. ???
