Anyone know where i can get some dirt cheap computers that come with nothing?

Im looking for a couple for some projects/friends(which is code for im dieing to make a cluster for no real reason).

I mean just the essentials, motherboards, cpu, ram, hard drive, network card. No monitor, keyboard or mouse. I dont mind buying some parts as long as its cheap.

Any one tried this for fun(this wont be too serious, just for fun)? Good sites?

The lindows pc at tigerdirect dont seem too bad, but any better deals?

I was thinking about that, but a warrenty would be nice. Just like new parts.

Plus some ebay people are just plain evil when it comes to shipping and handling.

I might have too but id like to avoid it.

Here are some cheap computers...don't know if they ship

http://advertisers.computoredge.com/codisplay/CUAC.htm

As far as creating a cluster, I've heard ClusterKnoppix is stupid-easy to set up. You may need at least 64 MB RAM, a 300 MHZ+ processor, and 2.5 GB+ to run this, but according to the site, you could get these for ~75$ each.

This is kind of annoying. Check out this pc[ammazon.com] (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000093S2B/ref=pc_de_a_smtd/102-5003390-6505737?v=glance&s=pc&vi=tech-data)

Its $300 bucks, if only they would take out the: 40GB drive and give me the cheapest on hand, keyboard, mouse, floppy, and speakers.

But if i build mine own its almost the same price, only then i dont get the extra crap(its almost the same price, i might as well get it. atleast them i can hope to sell it for a buck or two.).

thanks for the links guys.

any one every try this?

Your also getting Window XP you should be able to sell it for a reasonable price.

try www.pricewatch.com, they compare prices on places that sell parts, barebones systems, and anything you could want, cheap. Try PC-No OS.

Newegg.com sells barebones computers (http://www.newegg.com/app/manufactory.asp?catalog=3&DEPA=1) which seem to be what you're looking for.

Here in Augusta we have a store "Computer source" which sells overstocks, computer lots from Ubid (like a pallet of Pentium II's for $50-75 each without an OS), returns from other stores. They had like a Pentium Celeron 1.7 G with WinXP for $250, sound cards for $5-10 (OEM crystal sound) , etc . Maybe you could look around for a place like that. Are you going to make like a mini-Beowulf cluster?

Why not? Find an ebay seller in your area so you can pick it up yourself--no shipping.

I got

Cyrix 250 Mhz
3 GB HD
6 GB HD
256 MB RAM
Integrated sound & video
Almost broken windoze 98
$25

But the power supply sounds like my lawnmower, so I've gotta replace it. :( Still, it's a pretty good deal. :)

If it wasnt for the hard drive i wouldnt of had a nice computer for under $200 at newegg.com (www.newegg.com).

why dont they make really cheap hard drives? like just a couple of gigs(for a good price. i once a 40gb was almost as much as 20gb).

Have you got a link to this store?

I, too am in the market to build a cluster... a bunch of PIIs could be pretty valuable to me!

What part of the world are you in?
I've acquired most of my stuff just by being alert, and dumpster diving behind computer stores. Also, there's a place that gets a lot of State of Texas salvage that's pretty good, too. $5 nic's and $10-15 hard drives.. I have P-133's and P-166's and a k6 and a k6-2. Lots of fun on a Saturday night......

I looked in the telephone book- their number is 706-736-4100. They don't have a web site. I don't think they have any kind of mail order business. I can go by there in a couple of days and see what they have if you'd like.

Hillbilly country :D. Seriously, not alot of computer stuff here(upper upper ny, almost canada).

Plenty of drugs and tractors....

About the cpus, i dont think ill go lower than 1ghz. The prices are pretty close so i would pay alittle more. Now im wondering how bad my electric bill would be.

Alex Cavnar, any chance you have a reason for a cluster or do you just think there kool like me:D ?

Oh, I think they're DARN cool, but I actually have a valid reason for running one. It's a hobby reason, but still valid nonetheless.

I got this old, discarded Unixware server, and I'm trying to crack the passwords from its password file. There are around 130 accounts, and I'm looking at a few months' work if I let my 700mhz Duron chug through the passwords.

Don't worry-- the server is my own machine... I wouldn't be trying to crack someone else's box!

just a n00bs idea here, why do you care about the passwords?

what filesystem do it use? why dont use use a live linux/bsd disk to just brake it?

sorry, but i dont see why you need to do it, besides the fact its a use(which is enought).
