hello to all justlinux users.

i finally decided to stop gaming and all other useless stuff i was doing these last few years, and i've decided to switch to linux, and start programming.

no, i'm not gonna ask you what distro to choose ;) but i was searching amazon.com for good books about C, and since i have never programmed before, and since i never read any programming book before , i couldnt make my choice in this HUGE amount of books that amazon.com has.

what i'm asking to you, experienced users is to recommend me the books that are necessary to be a good C programmer. (i know that i will need more than 1 ;)

thank you
i.Am.Phil

Basic to Intermediate C book:

A Book on C, auth Kelly+Pohl, pub Benjamin/Cummings

Highly recommended

Advanced C book:

Expert C Programming: Deep Secrets, auth Peter Van Der Linden, pub PTR/Prentice Hall

also Highly recommended

Both easy to read but very informative.

:)

I like it because I am impatient. :p

It lets you dive right in, but it may not be good for a beginner. What does everyone else think? It is also relatively inexpensive...

If this is your first programming experience, I'd just go to a bookstore, take a look at a few, and pick the one you understand most easily. (Actually, I'd just search for something available online for free)

It might also be a good idea to grab anything you find in the local library too.

Here are some webpages you might want to get aquainted with before you start shelling out $ on books.

http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/Dave/C/index.html

Oh yeah, and that ^^ is the C book I have. If you want to buy a book, you can't go wrong with that one. :)

If your new to programming AND new to C I would say "Absolute Beginners Guide to C" by Greg Perry, you can get it at amazon.com, great for beginner programmers ;)

I'd also try looking at some books on the internet first.

"C By Dissection" by Kelly & Pohl is pretty good for people who have not programmed before and want to start programming in C. After that, you might want to start reading the most authoritative guide K&R "C Programming Language" (the white book) for all the nuts and bolts.

by Herbert Schildt
Heh, I think there's a whole section on how bad he is on the comp.lang.c FAQ. (For some reason, he's also the first one I read ;)). As long as you don't use it as a reference I'd say it's fine, though. I don't remember their reasoning, but how bad can the guy be? :D
