how do you change the minimum font size in netscape? I've gone to the edit->preferences menu and changed font size and selected the 'use my defaults' but it doesn't seem to have an effect. I'm really struggling to read some of these topic menus in netscape

I suggest installing TrueType fonts. There's an NHF available, and there's also a TrueType-mini-HOWTO for XFree86 4.0.x
