Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : glibc-common - failed dependancy loop

I'm working on installing gcc. Each new rpm I download fails due to a couple more missing dependancies.

So far it's been working ok, but now I'm stuck on this one:

glibc-2.2-12.i386.rpm

This is what I get at redhat when I search for "glibc-common" - a rpm required by another rpm. When I run that rpm, I get the following error:

failed dependencies: glibc-common = 2.2 is needed by glibc 2.2-12.

It looks like I'm stuck in this loop. I've downloaded the rpm from red hat labelled "glibc-common". http://www.redhat.com/swr/i386/glibc-common-2.2-12.i386.html

Ideas?

That's one reason why I dumped Red Hat for Debian.
I think you may have to force the install or something.
There is a helpful HOWTO on rpm somewhere.

I had this exact same problem, and this is the reason I'm soon dumping Mandrake for Debain :D. RPMs are finicky little *****es, and this is a very common problem. I tried to force the RPM, but that didn't work too well. As it turned out, glibc 2.1 was needed by X. As soon as I forced glibc 2.2 over it, X wouldn't work. I had to install the old package over glibc 2.2. I'm still not sure how to do it via RPMs. You could try installing it from source, as I've never had any issues doing that :)

Hi
I'm having pretty much the same problem. I'm trying to install "Screem" into Mandrake from a cd and keep getting dependency errors. All the needed rpms are not on the cd. I can find them online but Kpackage refuses to install some, saying something like "this rpm manager can only install packages with major numbers <=3". How do you install from source? Do you download the rpms marked src rpms? How difficult is it for someone who is, as you might have guessed, completely new at it?

Thanks,
SW

I have a choice of freshly burned cd's:

1-Slackware 7.1
2-Mandrake 7.2
3-Debian (Latest)

Remember i would be mouving from drake here, so be gentle(for real) :P
