A used computer guy is offering me 3 Sun SparcStation 2's with a huge monitor, and assorted peripherals in a dusty cardboard box for $60 US. I've searched around and found that, depending on the processor, I can expect 40-80 Mhz performance. For connectivity there are AUI (thick ethernet?) ports that look like parallel ports. I've got a lot of mid-range stuff from dumpster diving, and I like fooling around with networking and programming, so I'm tempted. I think it's probably a good deal for me if everything works. My question is, (assuming they have, or I can get Solaris) what is the Intel equivalent? A Pentium 133 with 64 Mb RAM? How is it going to feel? And for those of you with experience on these boxes: would you buy them?

Im not 100% sure due to never actually seeing a sparc, but I know on some of the Cisco routers Ive seen they will have a AUI port on them. If you want to use Ethernet your going to have to look for a AUI to RJ45 Transceiver. You should be able to pick them up for about 8 bucks off ebay. They are about the size of a credit card but about 3/4 of an inch thick. Paying $60 would depend on if the things actually work but if they did, Id say go for it just to have something new to play with.
