I checked the SANE page but all their instructions assume that the SCSI scanner is being picked up by the cat command and in my case it is not.

Maybe if I gave a bit more info on my setup it would help. I'm running SuSE 7.1 and have an INITIO SCSI adapter with an external Iomega zip drive attached to it and a Microtek ScanMaker II attached to the zip drive to make a serial conneciton with the scsi addapter. At first I figured that the scanner wasn't being picked up by SuSE because I don't have a terminator on it but when I go into the scsi card bios it is listed there with the zip drive and also windows pics it up so I don't think it is the lack of a terminator. This is my output from the cat /proc/scsi/scsi:

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 id: 05 Lun: 00
Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: J.02
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Note there is no refference to a scanner. Please help.

Have you tried just plugging in the scanner by itself and seeing what happens?

Plugging the scanner by itself is a good idea, unfortunately when I attempted to do this I noticed that the connector in the back of the scanner is different than that in the back of the computer and it only fits the zip drive. Is there any other commands I can try to get Linux to search for the scannerin through the scsi card?

I'm not sure how to get it working.

Have you had a look at the scsi documentation? Mine is in /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-html

Lots and lots of scsi documentation there both in text format and html.
