As we usually suggest here, run xmms at the commandline/console and see what error messages are generated.

Try different mp3 files as well... the file may be corrupted especially if you downloaded it.

Try with "mpg321", I think it comes with Red Hat.

hehe...awesome. How about the mpg123 plugin or whatever for xmms, will that allow mp3s to be played through xmms? Or will it still be text based?

G4L search results for 'mpg123 plugin xmms' (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=mpg123+plugin+xmms&btnG=Google+Search). The second hit looks promising.

The only difference between mpg123 and mpg321 is that mpg123 is closed-source while mpg321 is not. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

why do my redhat 9 still can't play mp3 even after i've installed all updates and the xmms mp3 plugin? the mp3 will only play about a second and it will stop there.... Sounds to me like the sound card wasn't properly detected during the initial install. Can you play other types of sound files? Try a midi or wav or rm. Are the sounds ever static-like?

Also try with different sound drivers, in the XMMS config.

mpg123 and mpg321 are both open source. mpg123 has limitations on distributation however. (for buisiness use, or for profit use, must contact author)

mpg123 is also slightly faster.

and why don't we try this. try downloading an ogg media file, and try playing that in xmms. or ogg123, see if it runs. that way we can see if its soundcard or mp3 plugin.

Check this (http://www.vorbis.com/faq.psp#what).

IIRC, Red Hat comes with Ogg support. There are some samples of .ogg files so you can download them and see if you can play them.

Go to this page and download the file according to your platform :

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3?stat=4&idpl=509018&com=xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.i386.rpm.html

I hope this solve your problems. Mine solved by downloading and installing this file. Else you should check your sound modules or reconfigure your soundcard by using sndconfig.
