Hi folks
I hope this is the correct forum for this thread.
I have a friend who currently is using Windows but seems quite interested in the possibility of making a switch to Linux. In the interests of advocacy I am wanting to answer as many of his questions as I can, but am stumped on this one:
He is a DJ and uses a MS-based program called 'Cubase' (or an alternate but similar program is called 'Fruity Loops'). This program is a real-time music-editing, mixing, sampling program with different add-ins.
The question then: are there any similar programs (or a clone) available for Linux or would it be best to use something like WINE so that he could emulate the MS environment?
Thanks
-Andy

I'm not familar with cubase but I know of fruityloops. I have tried using wine to emulate it but it didn't work (hit and miss with wine).

I do not know of any linux programs that are similar to fruityloops in the fact that they come complete with samples, etc.

But if you are looking for multitrack software (ala cool edit pro) then Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) or Ardour (http://ardour.sourceforge.net/) may be of some use.

Beware of Ardour though, it may look pretty, but the installation is far from it.

Hopefully http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/354/ will give you a few ideas on what is available.

Also search the main freshmeat.net page as I see sound/music editors & sequencers posted quite often.

Search JLC, there is a thread in here somewhere with a link to a page that has a very detailed information on audio programs for linux. I used to have a link to it in my book marks, but a few bone head actions on my part led to a couple of system reinstalls.

I think the search I used here was audio programs.

You'll know when you find the link. I think the guy has tried every audio program ever written for linux.

I'm also a hobbist DJ since I can't make a decent wage at it here in NC. Who wants to get paid $75 a nite. Too much head ache and too little satifaction.

Thanks for the info and tips guys ... do appreciate it. I am a little hesitant about recommending something that is going to be either too unstable/buggy to run or too difficult to install ... don't want to put the guy off, so I do appreciate the insights.
I'll follow up on the links/suggestions and thanks, once again.

Gaxus:
What was it about Ardour that was a pain to install?

JamminJoey:
Was this the link you were thinking of?

Looks like the guy has a book out too.

Well last time I tried it there wasn't a package out. So you had to download it via cvs, compile all the dependancies and the dependancies for all the dependancies, set all of them up, possibly patch the kernel and recompile that if you want good speed and then compile and run ardour itself. Once I did all that and tried to run ardour I got an error message and it wouldn't work, I tried posting to the mailing list but no one had any idea as to what was wrong.

So it was a load of wasted time for me.

Thanx Gaxus - that isn't a good recommendation for a veteran let alone a Linux newbie!!

I did send him the links with your health warning, but at least I can fill him in on the details should he ask.

Cheers guys
