I just took my first steps in Linux, I've been reading the boards here as well as checking out other sites for about 4 months and I downloaded Knoppix-STD since I can't fully dedicate this PC to linux YET:)(6 more months) and I was wondering if I could download and install new apps on Knoppix-STD since it boots from the CD? I'm not sure if it is, but it would really help me learn even more if I could.

just so I understand your question you want to install new programs while booted off the knoppix cd?
if this is the case you will not be able to install new programs. because you are running Linux from a cd rather then your hard disk. :D the live cd's like knoppix are meant to allow you to test out linux without erasing your current OS.

you might want to try just knoppix, rather than knoppix-std.. the std version is more security oriented whereas the regular knoppix distro is more complete as far as apps on the CD

You can install small apps if you download them in ramdisk and compile them and install them to the ramdisk or your persistent /home. They will disappear once you lose power though unless you put a /home onto a pendrive or floppy. There's an example of how this is done on knoppix.net using F-prot a virus scanner. http://knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1515#6904
You run the script and it d/l's and compiles the source for F-prot, gets the latest virus definitions and installs it in the ramdisk. Then you can use the run script that mounts all hdd partitions in fstab and scans for virii, then unmounts them.
I've got a remaster called overclockix, that runs distributed computing and burn-in type apps. Its also got some of the security tools from knoppix STD as well as some hw-tools, and filesystem tools.

I wrote scripts to make running the DC apps easy, and coustomized the look of the desktops for KDE, flux, and ice.

That is pretty  arkaine23 and to
Tony your welcome. if what arkaine23 suggested is what you were looking for give that a shot:D I would also try a different version of knoppix like
YorkshireYank suggested.

I think I'll give regular Knoppix a shot. I downloaded STD just to help set up some defenses for myself and some of my friends that keep getting hacked at LAN parties they go to and I liked the idea of getting into Linux at the same time.

Remastering your own knoppix is really fun if you like digging around inside of linux. You do need some things:
1gb of ram +swap
3GB of linux filesystem space on a hdd
time
if all you do is remove and install apps from regular knoppix though, you can get it done in a few hours.
