Yeah... so.
I just got linux up and working and everything and my browser, after a lot of trouble, working. Now I want to get gaim to work. I ran the config file like the installer said, and what it gave me didn't sound good. Here's the config.log

so............ i don't know what the hell i'm supposed to do. What do I do?

you don't have a compiler, you need gcc. during the install of your os, if you installed the development packages, you would of got gcc. so now head over to rpmfind.net, and search gcc in the box, and download it. You know, gaim can be installed by rpm. I would search gaim at rpmfind.net, and download and install it by rpm, if you don't want to wait for compiling and everything, and just get gaim quickly. Then later you can install gcc. Then comile programs, unless you feel the need to now.

scenario

Ok... I'll try to do that...
I've been wondering... what is an rpm? How is it different from one of those .tar.gz things?

You should really search for your answer but I'm feeling generous... must be tired or something.

RPM= Redhat Package Manager. Basically you download an RPM and install it using "rpm -ihv whatever.rpm". RPM's are binary and have already been compiled.

.tar.gz= the source for a particular program. You have to compile it yourself on your own system.

If you can, go for the RPM first. Use .tar.gz only if you have to.

alright, I grabbed the first rpm in the list for "all" (I don't know which one i installed, the ISO was called psyche-i386, if that counts for anything) and when I tried to run it, it tells me that 'packages' weren't 'found'. The unlocatable packages were::
XFree86-libs = 4.2.0 (required by XFree86-devel)
gtkspell-devel (required by gaim)

RPMs are Red Hat, precompiled binary packages. To install something from an RPM, you just click it, and your package manager will install it, from it or by command rpm -ivh name.rpm. Basically just click and go install or command. It makes things easier, and it for distrobutions like Red Hat, and ones based on Red Hat such as Mandrake, SuSE, etc. The thing is, it's already compiled, you just have to install it. With a compressed file like tar.gz, and a tar.bz2, etc. they mostly carry the source, and all the source files are in there, and you have to compile it together to make the program. Though sometimes, like with Opera, which isn't Opensource, mind you, give you all the files in the tar, or whatever, and you just run the shell script, the install.sh, so Opera can install them. RPMs are just Red Hats precompiled binary packages. If you get dependency errors, like it says "blah, blah is needed by gaim###" whatever, search for that dependency name at rpmfind.net, and install it's rpm. Then go for the main one, gaim in this case, again.

alright, look at my post ^ up there^

search for XFreelibs 4.20, whatever they are and, gtk-spell, at rpmfind.net and go install their rpms, and then go install gaim. You have x right?.....just wondering...

scenario

X? You mean the GUI with the desktop and everything? Yeah, I have that. I'm trying to get the xfree thing right now

tanna

yeah okay, good. hopefully you took one of the first gaims listed in the search result hits. then as you know, get your gtk-spell also, install them. Then the gaim.

Since you're starting with Red Hat, let me suggest you two options to manage packages.

1. Get Ximian Red Carpet. (http://www.ximian.org/products/redcarpet/) This one is more user-friendly than the 2nd option.

2. Get APT-RPM (http://apt-rpm.tuxfamily.org/) plus Synaptic (http://freshmeat.net/redir/synaptic/17518/url_homepage/synaptic) (this is a graphical frontend which will make things easier!).

With either of them, you will be able to install, update, remove packages. And the main thing, it will deal with dependencies for you.

Are you using Red Hat? If so, go to apt.freshrpms.net & download the appropriate file for your version. Install that & then open the console & as root type apt-get update & when that is done type apt-get install gaim.
After you're done with that go ahead & apt-get install synaptic & that will give you a GUI for apt.

yeearrrgg...

I tried to install the Xfree Libs, but it said that there was already a later version installed.

I tried to install the Gtkspell 2.0.4 but it said I had a missing package....
Apparently, somehow, I'm still missing gtkspell.....

linux is..... funny.

((I think I'm going to catch some Z's, got an early morning tonight. Maybe I'll be able to beat linux with a stick later))

Well if gtk spell is missing something, get that from that site, and maybe XFree libs, well yea, it said it wasn't there, so I was asking if you had it, I guess some reference of it isn't in the $PATH.

Go for apt like the above mentioned and see what happens.
