I just got my own computer with Mandrake 9.1 Linux on it and my brother keeps telling me to switch back to windows 98, I had other people say don't switch and I'm not and he keeps on saying "If you had Windows on your computer you could do that on your computer!," so I want to get Wine or another Windows emalator to play some of my games on (and a compiler) so my bro can stop bugging me!
One of my buds says he can't help me with me beening Mandrake for reasons unknown to me, me and my dad tryed getting it to work, but to no avail, so how can I get it to work on mandrake? Or is it inpossable

Either install the version of Wine included with your distro as most do include Wine, or install the one you downloaded with (as root)
rpm -Uvh --test wine-20030115-4mdk.i586.rpm
and if no errors, remove the '--test' option to install.

a ha!
error: failed dependencies:
libwine.so is needed by wine-20030115-4mdk
libwine_unicode.so is needed by wine-20030115-4mdk
I'm getting those right now...but where?
and those are on the list of stuff wine uses on rpmseek.com, do I need to get those??? And where???

I would advise you to first see if you have those libwine etc. packages on your installation cd(s).
What I found with a rpmfind.net search for 'libwine.so' (http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=libwine.so&submit=Search+...).
Have you tried installing the Wine packages from your cd's instead of the one you downloaded?

Go to Mandrake's ftp servers for your distro version and check to see what they have that is Wine related etc.

I don't want to scare you away from Linux, but don't be suprised if your games won't work perfectly with Wine, if at all. If you're into PC gaming, it's not a bad idea to leave a partition for Windows so you can play your games.

hey that wine rpm you are trying to install is pretty old. Why not just get the wine source from the wine website? That way you will have a new version, and you won't have to try and find winelib or whatever it is asking for. All I think you need to install are byacc and flex, and those are on the mandrake cds.

P.S. I have NEVER gotten a directx game to work properly with wine. :o

I got out my 2nd Mandrake CD and it installed perfectly! Now to test it.
And I'm not going to be putting any 3D games on here, if I was I would've got'en WineX.

See? Always check your installation cd's or distros ftp servers first unless you are set on installing a newer version of the app than was included with your distro. :)

Glad we could help you get started.
You should also have lots of documentation installed by the Wine rpm package.
Have a look...
