I'm new to using Linux on workstations, and i have only tried Red Hat and Debian.

Red Hat (7.1) was very easy to install and use, and Debian has apt, but is out-dated and hard to set-up and get to work. (x config problems)

How is Mandrake and *Progeny Debian ??

Try both so see if either one will install with YOUR particular hardware.

That's all I have to say on this subject.

Come on everyone... Pile in.

You may also want to read one of the lastest Which distro should I get (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=024267) threads from yesterday. Enjoyed that one. :D

Linux distros are like cheese. All the same but they have a different flavour.

This subject has been done to death, but a quick summary IMO:

Mandrake - very easy to setup, very easy to configure, lot's of software. Accused of not following the Linux hacker spirit for this reason.
SuSE - like Mandrake, but has a different style. Most popular in mainland Europe (it's German).
RedHat - the basis for Mandrake, often seen as the "business Linux" for no apparent reason. Can't go far wrong with it and there's loads of support.
Slackware - a very "clean" distro that let's you get down and dirty (not as user friendly in some ways, but you won't have any problems with compiling etc.) - uses a different package system to the three above, and this isn't supported by some apps (although you can always compile from source).
Progeny Debian - this is meant to benefit from Debian's power but is easer to configure. Haven't tried it.

Why not order a few cheap CDs from the net and try each of them - not sure about sites in Norway, but you can order them from the US (http://www.linuxcentral.com) or the UK (http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk - excellent service).

You do have the option of booting into different distrobutions of Linux, or different versions the same distro. Within X you also have the option of changing between Gnome and KDE Gui's. You will find it within the panel options if you have RedHat Distro installed. ;)

ok thanks- but let me rephrase the question. Once Mandrake is installed can you also install -say Redhat- into and with the mandrake installation without wiping out the Mandrake??

thanks again

Why would you want to install Mandrake over Redhat? It would probably mess up all your setup completely!

You could simply install two distros on to two seperate partitions, and then mount the other partitions.
