music problem

I have redhat 8 and i'm trying to play music with it.I can play midi fine but i tried every program to play mp3's and wav's but no sound ever came out.Is it something i'm doing wrong or do i need a special program that didnt come with the redhat cd?

I don't use redhat but I have heard it doesn not have mp3 support right out of the box.
