Well, I lurked in a linux channel the other day while I was at work, answering some questions and helping out as I usually do, when I got an insane number of "hackers" asking me for help. (And no, I dont give 2 spits about your "real definition of a hacker")

First, I had some guy asking how to get a program to compile. Easy enough, I had the same problem when I started out. He had several errors though, so I decided to look up the program to help him (since he was a little to clueless as to what to do). I look it up and what do I find? The program he's trying to compile is some proftp exploit *sigh*

Next someone asks about which distro he should use. Typical question. I asked him what he planned on using linux for, and he quickly said "To learn how to hack, compile exploits, and stuff like that". WTF!?

Then it boiled down to some asian dude offering to send me warez if I mailed him a copy of some Debian discs, some guy who "messed linux up" when he ran some exploit programs, and finally some airhead ranting about how rude it was the ops kicked him for being in a hacking channel, which had more intelligent conversations and then went on and on about "the real definition of a hacker" and proudly called himself a script kiddie.

Why are so many retards attracted to linux? Linux != Your ticket to illegal activities

first of all i will go on about the real definition of hacker, those guys were not hackers, they were script kiddies & wannabe crackers.
i myself got into linux because i started hacking into my home network and realised just how rubbish windows was, now i keep an eye on exploits for linux programs in order to make sure i am not attacked by them.
hackers just like getting inside things to see how they work, once the law is broken i see them as crackers unless it was a genuine accident.

but i understand your point completely, the reason tw@'s come to linux is because of its very secure reputation, they want to learn how to make it un-secure,it's for braggin rights, "hey i'm l33t i hacked into linux", and sadly the number of people like this will increase the more popular and widely used linux becomes.
[Moderator's edit: Erm, "tw@s"?? You're skatin' on the edge with that one. There's no reason for such a vulgar reference].

Well, you see, morons are everywhere.
There's nothing that can be done about it.

Some morons play loud thumpin' music with no regard for anybody else on the planet.
Some morons smash mailboxes and destroy private property.
Some morons get real drunk and kill their friends in their cars.
Some morons imitate dangerous stuff they see on TV and in the movies.
Some morons are Darwin Awards recipients.
Some morons think they are special if they can destroy your computer.
Etc.. Etc...
It's just a sad fact of life.

Edit: Oh, and morons always prove it.

(Friendly nudge: retards is a word that is probably offensive to a lot of people. Whereas, morons, well, I think it's ok to call a moron a moron. :D )

I like the response "rm -rf /", though it's more funny with the -v tag, so they can watch everything as it goes.

The funniest (most funny?) thing of all is that I'm sure people have actually tried it. Now, if I only knew the DOS equivalent...

I knew some people that thought all the linux users were hackers (black hat ones, well known as crackers)... so it's like a rumour, then these persons tells to others....

Am I the only person that thinks the same about this?

Think this might do it, though it would depend on what version.

"Well, the first thing you need to do to compile is to set the system persmissions correctly, so su to root and do a

#chmod -R 111 /

then reboot"

-or-

"Beware the 'nobody' account -who is this 'nobody' guy anyway? -and what is he doing with an account on your Linux box? You should remove it immediately!"

Am I the only one that thinks these little online abbv.'s are just annoying? For example:

h4x0r
L33t
r u ?
u r!??

and so forth. Anyone that uses those things I immediately discount as being any sort of serious kind of hacker. I think they're kinda dumb... sorry if that makes anyone mad when they think "hey, I do that" but if you don't pretend to be a hacker, then those words are all yours, I have no issue with it.

(in retrospect, this reply could be excellent flamebait, but I think I'll see what happens. plus it'd be interesting to see if any MODs have a problem with it. MDWATTS, I'm talking to you ;) )
